Plant Potting Guidelines – updated 3/12/25
- Pot up plants several weeks prior to the plant sale so the plants are established by sale day. Choose only healthy, pest free plants.
- Identify plant to be potted.
- Make sure pots are clean. Wash pots with 1 part bleach to nine parts water. Choose pot of appropriate size for the plant you have chosen.
- Place coffee filter in the bottom of the pot.
- If using a large pot, you may add shredded newspapers at the bottom of the pot to cut down on the amount of potting soil used.
- Use only clean potting soil or compost for the planting medium. Potting soil is better because it is lighter than dirt.
- Use tools to loosen soil around the plant you have chosen. Cut through extended roots.
- Use trowel to dig up plant. Move plant with root ball and plenty of soil to try and prevent transplant shock. This will keep the fine roots intact, giving the plant a better start and help to prevent wilting.
- Cover the bottom of the pot with the potting mix. About 2 inches deep.
- Place plant in pot allowing room for roots to spread.
- Fill pot with potting soil to cover roots.
- WATER IMMEDIATELY!
- Complete the necessary information on the plant labels. Use a permanent marker only on the label.
- Put a picture on the back if possible. Extra labels will be available at the MGC meeting and on the day before the sale at set up. Skewers will be provided to secure the label after your plant has passed inspection for bugs and diseases.
- Bring plants to the pavilion between 1pm to 4 pm on Friday, the day before the sale.
